Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC)

MISSION | Helping Today's Youth Meet Life's Challenges

The NJROTC mission is to instill in students in the United States secondary education institutions the values of citizenship, service to the United States, personal responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment.  NJROTC teaches self-discipline, self-confidence, teamwork, and leadership skills to help young men and women meet life's challenges.

HISTORY

The NJROTC program was established by Public Law in 1964 and may be found in Title 10, U.S. Code, Chapter 102. The program is conducted at accredited secondary schools throughout the nation, by instructors who are retired Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard officers and enlisted personnel. The NJROTC curriculum emphasizes citizenship, leadership development, and our maritime heritage, operations, seamanship, navigation, and meteorology. Classroom instruction is augmented throughout the year by community service activities, drill competitions, field meets, flights, visits to naval activities, marksmanship training, and other military training. Uniforms, textbooks, training aids, travel allowance, and a substantial portion of instructors' salaries are provided by the Navy.

NJROTC is a high school elective that focuses on developing students' character, leadership, and teamwork skills. It is not a military commitment.

Key Points:

  • Student-First: Prioritizes academic success.
  • Two Categories: General students and Drill Team members.
  • Flexible Schedule: No homework assignments.
  • Curriculum: Covers naval history, survival skills, etiquette, goal-setting, physical fitness, and inspections.
  • Uniforms: Issued to students.
  • Goals: Teaches ethical values, leadership, communication, health, education, military history, and teamwork.

Overall, NJROTC offers a balanced learning experience that combines academics with character development and leadership training.
